2008 Harvest ...

Since the last newsletter Yarrawood has enjoyed a prosperous 2008 harvest.  The 2008 Harvest commenced on the night of the 20th of February with the machine harvesting of our Chardonnay block 2b. This was a very exciting time being the first pick for the year, and my first harvest at Yarrawood Estate as vineyard manager. Constant sampling was necessary in all varieties as consistent warm conditions resulted in fruit ripening much earlier than normal years. Over the next 4 weeks we harvested both clones of our Pinot Noir, Chardonnay block 2a and Sauvignon Blanc block 6a. The 19th of March saw the start of our Shiraz harvest, followed by a 2 week rest and the harvesting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The end was in sight and came on the 23rd of April with the last pick of Riesling, a handpick for our Autumn Harvest Riesling. Over all, the harvest ran smoothly and the fruit was of a high quality. This will make the 2008 vintage one to watch.

Soil Care ...

Fertilizing is an important part of growing quality grapes for wine production. Constant monitoring of soil nutrition in order to revitalize soil when necessary is important.  Super phosphate, gypsum and lime were applied via a spreader during Autumn. This promotes good vine health and will aid in the production of top quality fruit for the 2009 harvest.

Pruning ...

Pruning is now in operation. Two methods of pruning are practiced at Yarrawood, cane pruning and spur pruning. Depending on the grape variety and the product that it is to be used for, different methods  are used. The 12th of May saw the start of pruning in our Chardonnay block 2a, where cane pruning has been utilized.

Land Care ...

As a part of an ongoing revegetation program to maintain healthy waterways, Yarrawood is working closely with Melbourne Water. This programme involves the planting of native vegetation along the banks of the Steels Creek. This year will see the eradication of noxious weeds, and the replanting of local indigenous trees and grasses.   Like all in the Yarra Valley, we are looking for much needed rain to revitalize our storage dams, and replenish water in the soil profilce.

Best regards and chears,

Stuart Elliott and the team at Yarrawood
